How to Listen

There are lots of ways to listen beyond just our webpage.

The bottom line is, our books are podcasts, and you can listen to them in any way you would normally listen to podcasts!

The below explanation will cover some details in this order:

  • How are the books organized?

  • How can I browse the catalogue?

  • How can I access the paid-only books?

  • What podcast players can I use?

  • How do I put these books on a Yoto player?

If you still have questions after you read this (incredibly clear and helpful) guide, email us at contact@1000goodbooks.org and we will help in any way we can.

How are the books organized?

Our books are organized into five (five!) podcasts.

FREE PODCAST - One is a free podcast with several books at a time, that rotates through books on a monthly-ish basis. Access it HERE. You can also search for it (“1000 Good Books Podcast - Free Channel”) on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or pretty much any podcast app you prefer.

FOUR PAID CHANNELS - Our full library is organized into four age-based categories. Access to all of the books in each of our age categories comes with a single membership: $5 a month or $50 a year.

How do I browse the catalogue?

The catalogue of books is best accessed on our website rather than the substack app. If you came here in the app, our website is 1000goodbooks.org. We have pages for each age category that list the books in that category. You can also click the links below:

Older Teens and Adults

How can I access the paid-only books?

Or in the immortal words of Brian Regan: “How do I get this goodness in me?”

First, upgrade to a paid membership:

Then, it’s super simple. You can listen to the embedded files of each episode on our webpage. Or you can listen in a podcast app.

What Podcast Players Can I Use?

You can use any podcast player. There are four players that are a little easier, but it’s pretty simple either way.

Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, and Pocket Casts

Browse our catalogue in a web browser on your device, and decide on a book. Then click on an episode of that book. Click on the “more options” button. It will look like this:

Then all you do is press the button for any of the four apps listed, that app will open and give you an option to follow the show, and hey presto! you will be able to listen to any of the books on that channel! (Of course, you have to already have that app installed on your device - we’ll take that as a given!)

Other Podcast Apps

If you want to listen on a different App, you just have to use the RSS feed (the last button above). For a guide on how to listen to the paid channels on other players, click HERE.

How do I put these books on a YOTO Player

If you have a YOTO player, you can load our books onto YOTO cards - having instant access to all of our books, instead of spending a fortune buying them individually!

If you don’t know what YOTO players are, they are a great way for kids to listen to audio books online without a screen or unfettered access to the internet. If you are interested, check it out HERE.

If you already have a YOTO player, there are two main ways you can access our books.

Link an entire podcast: You can access by linking an entire podcast to a card using the RSS feed, as discussed above. If you do this option, it will only show all of the most recent episodes. Here’s a guide: How to link a podcast

Link a specific book to a card: The other way is that you can download all of the episodes for a single audiobook onto a blank YOTO card by creating a playlist and then linking that playlist to the blank card. Here’s a page with a series of guides: How to “make your own” playlist on a card

Your YOTO should have come with one blank card (it’s orange and says “Make My Own”) but if you want to buy more blank YOTO cards click HERE.
