“She hoped to be wise and reasonable in time; but alas! alas! she must confess to herself that she was not wise yet.”
Persuasion is the story of Anne Elliot, the daughter of a baronet fallen on financial woes. Anne is persuaded to make a decision she later realizes was in grave error. This novel is Austen’s last completed work and generally regarded as her most mature writing. It explores the social pressures and influences that weave a web of responsibility between friends and family, for better or, sometimes, worse.
